It isn’t unusual to have rodents in your home as they often find various ways to enter and make it their own. Removal of these intruders is an entirely different story. There are several ways to do this, but the most common are mouse traps.  Although effective when used properly, there are a few user errors that can prevent you from catching the mice in your home.

If you are having difficulty with your mouse trap, check for these simple mistakes:

  1. Not Enough Traps

Most mice are caught on the first night of using traps. After that point, the numbers go down as the mice become more aware of the threat. Plant several traps wherever you think there may be mice to increase your odds.

  1. Wrong Bait

While cheese may work in the cartoons, mice prefer nuts and seeds. Peanut butter is a great substitute, and a small amount is all you need to lure them in.

  1. Location

Mice naturally fear wide open space and will stick to secluded areas and edges of the room. Use this to your advantage when placing traps and put them where they will be most effective.

  1. Trap Positioning

It isn’t enough to just put the trap near the wall. You need to have the trigger facing the path where a mouse crawls. They are more likely to cross it than to expose themselves walking around the trap. This technique will coax them onto the trigger.

  1. Your Scent

When applying the bait to the trap, people often make the mistake of not wearing gloves. This leaves your scent on the bait and alerts them of danger. Wear protective gear to avoid leaving your scent and compromising your trap.

Mice can be a nuisance in your home and a challenge to get rid of, but if you follow these tips, your mouse traps will likely work more effectively.
